About NGCSU

For almost 125 years, North Georgia College & State University has been helping people gain a solid foundation on which to build their lives. A foundation which gives students an education that is second to none, to train students to become leaders in all endeavors, and to provide an environment which fosters lifelong living and learning skills.

The university, originally named North Georgia Agricultural College was established in 1873 as a land grant school of agriculture and mechanical arts. Over the years, the mission of the college evolved into one emphasizing the arts and sciences. The college was renamed North Georgia College in 1929 and in 1996 the college received university status and a new name: North Georgia College & State University: The Military College of Georgia.

In 1873, the first class of students requested that military training be a part of the curriculum at the college. The military program was established and has remained for nearly 125 years. Today North Georgia College & State University has a nationally prominent ROTC program administered by the United States Army. It is one of only six senior military colleges in the nation. NGCSU is unique in that it provides superior leadership training through its military orientation which also promoting a well rounded liberal arts education in an environment which recognizes the importance of a diverse student population totaling over 3300.

North Georgia College & State University was the first public college in Georgia to award a degree to a woman (1878), the first to grant athletic scholarships and the first military college in the nation to accept women into the Corps of Cadets.
North Georgia College & State University offers more than 50 majors at the baccalaureate level to prepare students for nearly any career. Master's level degrees are offered in Education, Education Specialist, Physical Therapy, Public Administration, and Community Counseling, as well as Family Nurse Practitioner.

NGCSU enrolls leaders and achievers. Entering freshmen post the highest average SAT scores of any state university in the University System of Georgia. NGCSU also boasts one of the highest retention rates and the best system-wide graduate rates.
